Youth Program

The Frederick Chapter's Youth Program has participle in the Maryland Youth Hunter Education Challenge (MYHEC) competitions for 9 consecutive years. Each year the children and coaches have gained knowledge from the events and sharpened their hunting and safety skills.

The senior team competition and came in Third place overall. The team members are Andrew Budd, Adam Cichelli, Kevin Kelkye, Tyler Roberson, and Michael Rugola. The team took first place in Hunter Safety Trail. Kevin Kelkye took second place in Rifle and fifth place in Muzzle loading. Adam Cichelli took third place in Orienteering. Andrew Budd took fourth place for Hunter Responsibility. Tyler Roberson took 5th place in Orienteering.

Mr. Kelkye, who directs the Frederick YHEC program, also does muzzleloading instruction. Jack Deatherage does the archery; Kevin Hancock, wildlife identification; and Tom Wheatley is the orienteering guru. Coach for the Frederick teams at this year’s championship were Mike Rugola.

Teams from Carroll, Howard, Prince George’s and Washington counties, and one representing both Garrett and Allegany counties, competed in this year’s championship. When the two-day event, which was held June 21-22 in Williamsport, MD at the Potomac Fish And Game.

Hunter Safety Courses at their Chapter house located at 4719 Reels Mill Road, Frederick, MD.  The Youth Program sells refreshments during the courses to raise money for their activities.
